Meet Nigel, a proud resident of one of Evolve’s services in Croydon, Nigel’s story is one of resilience, love, and living authentically. From early self-awareness to four long-term relationships and a marriage built on love and equality, Nigel has lived a full and rich life — all while challenging stereotypes and embracing his truth.
Read on as Nigel shares his personal reflections on identity, relationships, and finding comfort and connection in supported housing.
“So, I have been gay my whole life. I knew from a very early age. In my early 20s I had a couple of encounters with women which went fine but basically reaffirmed my belief that I preferred men.”
“I don’t really identify as a stereotypical gay man. I don’t talk, walk, dress or behave in an obviously gay manner. Most people don’t have a clue that I’m gay unless I tell them.”
“I’ve been very lucky that my sexuality has never caused problems for me. I was never discriminated against at work or socially. I had 4 decade long relationships over 40 years and I’m actually still married to Gregory, we were married in 2007 in South Africa.”
“Living in Croydon has been wonderful. I am so very happy here. I met a guy who turned out to be interested in me. There were a couple of close encounters in my room which came to nothing. Unfortunately he was evicted not long after and in retrospect I probably had a lucky escape. “
Nigel’s story is a testament to living authentically, finding love in unexpected places, and embracing every chapter with honesty and pride.
