Cooking Up Connection: Healthy Eating Workshops with Residents

Food has a special way of bringing people together. Whether it’s sharing a sweet treat, learning a new recipe, or simply sitting down to eat as a group, cooking activities can spark conversation, creativity, and confidence. That’s why we’ve been running a series of healthy eating workshops with residents — practical, hands-on sessions designed to celebrate food while promoting positive habits and wellbeing.

A Sweet Start: Valentine’s Chocolate Bark Workshop

On Monday 16th February, four residents took part in a Valentine’s Day chocolate bark decorating workshop. The session was a fun and relaxed way to explore creativity in the kitchen.

Residents melted chocolate bars and poured the melted chocolate onto baking paper before decorating it with a variety of toppings. Choices included nuts, dried fruit, peanut butter, and cookies, allowing everyone to customise their own chocolate bark.

Once the chocolate had set in the fridge, residents enjoyed their handmade creations together. The activity was not only delicious but also encouraged residents to experiment with flavours and ingredients while enjoying the social side of cooking.

Flipping Pancakes for Pancake Day

The following day, Tuesday 17th February, five residents celebrated Pancake Day by making pancakes from scratch.

After buying the ingredients together, residents learnt how to mix pancake batter and cook pancakes in the pan. For some, it was a brand-new skill, while others enjoyed refreshing their cooking knowledge. Once cooked, the pancakes were topped with both sweet and savoury options such as sugar and lemon or ham and cheese. The session created a lively and supportive environment where residents could learn practical cooking skills while enjoying the rewards of their efforts.

Promoting Healthy Eating Through Partnerships

Building on the success of these sessions, we’re excited to explore further opportunities to run healthy eating workshops that can link with existing brunch clubs. Through our wider partnership work with Formula One and Co-op, we have secured funding to support these workshops for residents.

The aim is to make sessions practical, engaging, and accessible while encouraging positive conversations around food, balance, and wellbeing. With themed sessions such as Pancake Day, we also promote a balanced approach to ingredients — including something healthy, something fruit-based, and a small “treat” ingredient. This helps show that healthy eating doesn’t have to mean restriction, and that food can be both nutritious and enjoyable.

Why Food Workshops Matter

Cooking together offers much more than just a meal. These sessions help residents build confidence in the kitchen, learn practical cooking skills, and connect with others in a relaxed and supportive setting. They also open up conversations about healthy eating and help encourage a more balanced relationship with food.

By making food activities fun, inclusive, and interactive, we hope to empower residents to make choices that support their wellbeing while still enjoying the foods they love. As we continue developing these workshops, we look forward to seeing even more residents getting involved — learning new skills, sharing meals, and celebrating the joy that food can bring.
