Homelessness continues to be a major issue facing thousands of people in London. Homelessness can affect anyone that is going through a challenging time for a number of reasons. In this blog we will explore a few of the main causes of homelessness in London.
Lack of affordable housing
One of the main causes of homelessness in London is simply a lack of affordable housing. Successive governments have failed to build anywhere near enough social housing in London. Currently in England this year there has been a net loss of social housing. This means that there has been more social housing either sold or demolished than there has been built. The result of this is longer waits for social housing and forcing people into the increasingly expensive private rental market. Increased demand for housing means higher rental prices that people may not be able to afford. Combine this with the current cost of living crisis and it is no surprise that many people are facing homelessness in London.
It is estimated that the average person in London spends almost half their income on rent. This is unsustainable for many households and leaves them in a very precarious situation. Additionally, the help that households often need is simply not provided by the government. The low cap on housing benefit means that people struggle to afford their rents and can result in people facing homelessness. This particularly affects families with children.
Inequality and discrimination

The lack of affordable housing, an insecure and unaffordable private housing market, and systemic inequality and discrimination are all significant contributors. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach that includes building more social housing, implementing policies to make private rentals more affordable and secure, and tackling discrimination in both employment and housing.
