‘When you work for Evolve you feel empowered’

Meet Jo, who is our Team Manager for Beacon House, one of our services for homeless young people in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

I came to the UK from Poland after finishing my diploma in a Social Work and Rehabilitation. My first job was as a Support Worker in a residential setting, supporting adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues. After a few years, I moved to London to work as a Community Outreach Worker organising activities and workshops for young people. In 2011, I decided to focus my career on the homelessness sector and applied for a Support Worker role in one of the adults’ hostels in West London. Although I have enjoyed my work with adults, I felt that supporting young people would be more challenging and rewarding for me – so now I work for Evolve – making my dream come true!

From day one I have felt extremely welcomed and supported by everyone at Evolve! In the first week, I was told: “Don’t be afraid ask questions if you unsure what to do. At Evolve there are no stupid questions!”

It was great advice and it made me feel very confident and comfortable that I will fulfil my role’s expectations. Over time, I have realised that Evolve’s managers are not managers – they are leaders that inspire and motivate their teams. I believe that one day I will become an excellent leader and working for Evolve definitely drives me towards that goal.

I am a Team Manager at Beacon House, which is supported accommodation for 16 young people aged between 16-24. I lead the team and support staff to deliver the best possible service for our customers.

I really enjoy working with homeless young people in London, as no two days are the same – everyday there are different priorities and challenges and that’s what make my work interesting!

When you work for Evolve you feel empowered and there are a lot of opportunities for your development such as secondments, abroad placements, internal and external trainings, internal transfers or being a part of project that will boost your skills. What I like the most about Evolve is that you are able to use your personal interests/skills at work in order to benefit and support customers.

I am a huge animal lover and believe that having a pet is very beneficial for people. It would be my dream to manage a hostel where every customer owned a pet!
